For any of you who know my story, you know that it wasn't Biggest Loser that saved my life. It wasn't a counselor, or a nutritional lesson or a trainer who brought me a second chance to live. It was God, through a song recorded by David Crowder titled 'He Is Jealous For Me.'
He loves like a hurricane, I am a tree. How he loves us...
Love saved my life. Christ's love for me, his undying love, full of compassion, mercy and grace.
Love is powerful, its unfailing, it is full of patience; but I believe so many of us overlook one of the most simple aspects of Love.
Mark 12:30-31 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’[a] The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[b] There is no commandment greater than these.
I have heard many a sermon focused on loving God, and loving our neighbors. Even health sermons where we point out that Loving with the Soul, Mind and Strength emphasizes that our Spirit, Mind and Body are involved in our love for Christ through how we live. I agree completely with all of this and I honestly believe that loving God is one of the greatest reasons we each have to become healthier in our own lives.
The element that I believe we miss is that we are instructed to love our neighbors as we love ourselves. Balanced love, not over emphasizing others before ourselves and not being ALL about ourselves either. This isn't about narcissistic love in our society, and taking tons of selfies because we love how we look: this is about honestly choosing to show ourselves true love, and then extending that true love to our neighbors.
Do you love yourself? Do you know how to love yourself?
When I broached this subject with some of my clients these are some of the comments I got back:
"I am so busy being a caregiver, I do not have time to put me first. And I have not loved me for a very long time. I have always lacked confidence, and felt like I could never measure up."
"Its impossible to love myself but am in for the challenge..."
"Loving ourselves is a challenge.... For me."
"I would love to LOVE me... Its been a long time."
The RetroFit Ministries Team and I have been working on creating a free 7 day #ILoveMe Challenge that we are inviting you to be a part of. No cost, no catch, it’s just an emphasis on what loving ourselves in a Christlike manner looks like. We will have little dares, video encouragements, and an incredibly supportive atmosphere for us all to say I Love Me.
